Abstract

This article aims to understand how students at a public school in the state of Rio de Janeiro conceive the image of science and scientists, and what elements are present in this construction. Historically, representations of science and scientists have been marked by stereotypical or traditional images, particularly those of scientists as white men who perform solitary work in closed laboratories. To understand how children construct the image of scientists, Chambers (1983) developed the Draw-A-Scientist-Test (DAST), a test that uses drawings created by participants to identify indicators that can help understand the image of scientists. In this research, we used the DAST as a data collection instrument, following the model proposed by Toma, Greca, and Gómez (2018), with a sample of 185 elementary school students. Participants were asked to draw a picture of one or more people practicing science and how and where the work is carried out.The theoretical contribution is based on Vigotski’s (2018) studies on children’s drawing. The results show that a non-stereotypical image predominates regarding the scientist's appearance, a stereotypical view regarding the activity carried out by the scientist and a stereotypical image regarding the scientist's workplace. The study points to the importance of working, from childhood, with the issue of scientific practice, showing the different contexts in which science is carried out and the collective and accessible character that must make up scientific study.
