Abstract

Literature in the classroom has proven to be an arduous task. This occurs due to several factors, such as the use of textbooks that focus almost entirely on grammar, the separation created between language and culture and the distance of the foreign language concerning the student's reality; among others. When thinking only about these issues, one concludes that the teaching process needs to be combined with useful materials, include culture, bring important issues to the student's reality, and prepare to work with the language in its different situations. In this aspect, it is understood that Literature unites and fills all the gaps left by these issues, but pedagogical practices constantly require reflection, motivation, and re-elaboration. To bring critical discussion on various topics to English classes, the aim is to address literature in the classroom (Candido, 1995). Therefore, this work proposes to expose The Hound of the Baskerville¸ by Arthur Conan Doyle, in adaptations such as those made by Penguin Readers and in the original, based on the need to discuss the living language (Bakhtin, 2013). Furthermore, based on the studies of Cosson (2009), about literary literacy, Tomich and Santos (2009), when addressing the acquisition of reading in a foreign language, among other theorists.
