Abstract

Abstract

The analysis of editorial cartoons empowers foreign language learners to critically explore the discourses or voices which are intrinsic to this genre, allowing students to express and elaborate their own arguments. This study aims at presenting a concise history of the emergence of the editorial cartoon as well as its historical evolution to understand how the relationships between space and time are built within the narrative space. To investigate this problem, the theoretical framework is rooted in Mikhail Bakhtin's Theory of Chronotopes (1998). The bibliographical qualitative research is developed through the interpretation of editorial cartoons applying the concept of chronotope, culminating in a suggested lesson plan for high school students which approaches the implications of teaching editorial cartoons in English. Aligned with BNCC set of skills and competences, the proposal for the application of interpretative tasks raises student's awareness on political and social issues. Therefore, this study intends to contribute to the development of further research on editorial cartoons in English, focusing on their application in the classroom environment and highlighting the importance of analyzing ideological beliefs within this genre as a way of boosting students’ critical awareness.
