Abstract

A study was performed in the greenhouse to evaluate an organic compost (CO) made of ‘Napier’ grass plus poultry manure (8:1, v/v dry basis) as a substrate conditioner for production of eggplant and tomato transplants. Increasing levels of organic compost were added to the industrial substrate Plantmaxâ HA (PL). The two components were combined in the following proportions (v/v): 15% CO + 85% PL, 30% CO + 70% PL, 45%CO + 55% PL, and 60% CO + 40% PL. Such mixtures and pure industrial substrate were used to fill up Isopor trays of 200 plugs that were sown with either eggplant (Solanum melongena, ‘F-100’) or tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum, ‘Gigante Kada’). The organic compost brought about beneficial effects as related to the growth of both species transplants through the reunion of desirable characteristics of each component. Additions up to 45% CO and up to 60% CO for tomato and eggplant, respectively, resulted in significant increases of biomass (above-ground and root systems), height and leaf area of transplants, thus indicating the viability of its use as a substrate conditioner.
